General Alfred Beckley Camp #865
Commander Everette Cyrus

Compatriots,
I hope that this letter finds all of you and yours in good health, spirits, and
most of all full of Confederate pride. The Gen. Alfred Beckley Camp needs your
help in reviving the Camp. I have spoken to Commander Cyrus and we discussed
some things that need to take place in the future. First and foremost are the
elections. We are 2 years overdue for elections. All positions need to be
filled. Commander, Lt Commander, Adjutant, Treasurer, and Chaplain. I know I can
depend on yall to fill these positions. The next order of business is the
soldier at Ury. He needs to be moved and brought to the American Legion Cemetery
in Beckley. The headstone has been ordered and will be sent to Melton’s
Mortuary. They will assist in the legalities and arrangements. Next, has to be
the upkeep of the Gen Alfred Beckley plot. As most of you know, we mow this area
and keep flags on it, as well as paint the fence around the plot. This year the
fence is in desperate need of some black paint. We will be doing this as soon as
the spring shows up for good. Volunteers are desperately needed. We also need to
try to raise some money, get a grant, or ask the City of Beckley to help in the
repairing of Mrs. Beckley’s Headstone. We have two big announcements to make.
The first one is we are asked to attend the Lee/Jackson Birthday Celebration in
Lexington, VA on January 19, 2008. The Division Commander Roger Ware, will lay a
wreath on Gen Jackson’s grave at the ceremony on behalf of the Division. We have
attended this event in the past and always had a wonderful time. What better way
to pay tribute to our heroes
than to show up at the birthday party. Besides, it’s only in the next state,
roughly 2 hours away. The next date you need to put on your calendar is the WV
Division Meeting on April 26, 2008 in Flatwoods, WV.
The Gen Alfred Beckley Camp will hold a meeting on January 12, 2008 at the
Raleigh County Library in the meeting room downstairs at 10:30am. I hope to see
all of you there, and start the year off right by fighting for our heritage!
Sincerely,
Shandy Keaton
Interim Adjutant
